I am Associate Professor at the Institute of Physics of Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso, Chile, and the leader of the ADMiRAL group. I’ve been interested in radio astronomy since my master’s, specifically in VLBI observations with extreme angular resolution. And I mean extreme even for VLBI. I work with RadioAstron (currently the best angular resolution in the world: 8 microarcsec) and the Event Horizon Telescope (soon to beat the record, currently ~20 muas). At these resolutions one needs elaborated methods for making images but in return can see an image of a black hole shadow for example.
One of my ideas at the moment is to build a 1—15 GHz range radio telescope in CHile to compliment the VLBI networks around the world. Within the group we have already performed some RFI testing in two beautiful desertic places in Chile and compiled a master catalog of soulrces that will be available for observations.
At the same time, together with my student we develop machine learning approaches to data extraction and analysis. Astronomy provides an almost endless field of opportunities in this sence. We are aiming at understanding the morphology of quasar jets, the shape of gamma-ray flares etc.
At the university I am building up the course portfolio and at the moment offer corses in Programming, Observational techniques in Astronomy, and Active Galactic Nuclei.
